Frequently asked questions about percentages

How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 25% of 200 is 200 × 25 ÷ 100 = 50. The calculator does this instantly when you enter both values.
How is percentage change calculated?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide the result by the original value, then multiply by 100. A positive answer is an increase and a negative answer is a decrease.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
A "percent" change is relative to the starting value, while a "percentage point" is an absolute difference. Going from 10% to 15% is a rise of 5 percentage points but a 50% increase.
